Today’s Sports Stats: September 30, 2017

The Houston Astros won their 100th game of the season last night making them the third team to win 100 games in 2017 (the Dodgers and Indians have also won 100 games).

This is the sixth time in MLB history that three teams have won 100 games in the same season. It was also done in 1942, 1977, 1998, 2002 and 2003.

Of the five previous times when three teams won 100 games in the same season, one of those 100-win teams won the World Series that year in 1942 (Cardinals), 1977 (Yankees) and 1998 (Yankees). None of the three 100-win teams made the World Series in 2002, and the Yankees were the only 100-win to make the World Series in 2003… they lost to the Florida Marlins that year in the World Series.

Only once in the five years noted above, 1942, did two of the 100-win teams reach the World Series and faced off against each other for the championship: That happened in 1942 when the Cards beat the Yankees.

It wasn’t surprising that Aaron Rodgers had four TD passes in Green Bay’s 35-14 win over Chicago. What was surprising, however, was that Rodgers only had 179 yards passing in the game.

In the previous 20 games when Rodgers threw four or more TD passes, he had never had less than 200 yards passing in that game. The lowest passing yards in a 4-TD game for Rodgers was 205 in a September 25, 2016 contest versus the Lions.

This was only the fourth time in Rodgers’ career that he had less than 200 yards passing in the same game where he had three or more TD passes.

Rodgers became the 37th QB in the Super Bowl era (since 1966) to have four or more TD passes with less than 200 yards passing in the same game. That stat has been “accomplished” 44 times since 1966. Jim Kelly did it three times in his career; Bubby Brister, Bob Griese, Carson Palmer, Brian Sipe and Steve Young each did it twice in their careers.

Packerstats 2017: Game 4, 35-14 win over Chicago

Here are some of the numbers that helped define the Packers 35-14 win over the Chicago Bears on September 28.

  • Davante Adams had a TD reception in the contest. Green Bay is 13-2 in games when Adams scores a TD.
  • The Pack scored 14 points in the first quarter. Since 2000, they are 34-4 (.895) in games when they score 14 or more points in the first quarter. They have won 22 straight when they tally 14 or more in the first quarter.
  • Green Bay has now won 17 of their last 19 when they get four or more takeaways in a game. They had four against the Bears.
  • The Packers held a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. They have now won seven straight when they hold the opposition scoreless in the first quarter. They are 63-8 (.887) when they hold their opponents scoreless at home since 2000.

  • The Bears missed a field goal attempt in the contest. Green Bay is 12-7 since 2012 in games when the opponents miss at least one field goal attempt.
  • Aaron Rodgers had four TD passes in the game, giving him 21 regular season games where he had four or more TD passes. The Pack is 18-3 in those games. The 21 games are tied with Dan Marino for fifth on the all-time list (Peyton Manning tops the list with 35 games with 4+ TD passes in a game). Rodgers also has two playoff games with four or more TD passes; the Packers were 1-1 in those two contests.
  • Green Bay had a 28-7 lead going into the fourth quarter. They are now 114-1 in games where they hold a 20-point or larger lead going into the final quarter. The only loss was in 1952.

  • Green Bay scored in each quarter in the game. Since 2000, the Pack is 66-12 (.846) in games when they score in each of the four quarters. They have now won 18 straight when they score in each quarter of a game. Their last loss at home when they scored in each quarter was in 2008 to Dallas.
  • Mason Crosby had a relatively quiet evening other than kicking five extra points; he did not attempt a field goal. It was only the 22nd game in his career that he did not attempt a field goal. He has attempted a field goal in 142 of 164 regular season games for the Packers.
  • Martellus Bennett had six receptions in the contest. Bennett’s teams are 9-10 when he catches six or more passes in a game.
  • Green Bay was held to less than 200 passing yards (169 to be exact). In games since 2000 when the Pack has less than 200 yards passing, they are 44-27 (.619).
  • The Pack has now won 19 of their last 20 games when they score 30 or more points. Since 2000, the Packers are second in the league with 102 games with 30 or more points (the Patriots top the list with 117 games). Green Bay is 94-8 (.992) since 2000 when they tally 30 or more points in a game.

Houston Astros’ second baseman Jose Altuve collected his 200th hit of the 2017 campaign last night in Houston’s 12-2 win over Texas. It is the fourth consecutive season that Altuve had 200 hits in a season.

Altuve’s became the 36th player in MLB history to have four or more seasons with 200 or more hits in a career. Ichiro Suzuki and Pete Rose top the list, each with 10 200-hit seasons. Ty Cobb had nine.

Since 2000, Altuve’s four 200-hit seasons ranks in a tie for fourth. Suzuki has 10 200-hit seasons this century while Michael Young and Derek Jeter are tied for second with six each. Altuve and Juan Pierre each have four.

Altuve made his MLB debut in 2011. Since that season, he has 1,246 hits. That is second behind Robinson Cano who has 1,298 hits since 2011. Miguel Carbrera is the only other player with 1,200 or more hits since 2011; he has 1,236.

Today’s Sports Stat-September 27, 2017

Just three weeks into the 2017 NFL season and 30 of the 32 NFL teams have already tasted defeat. The only remaining undefeated teams are the Atlanta Falcons and the Kansas City Chiefs sitting at 3-0 in the standings.

Since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, this is only the fifth season where two or fewer teams were still undefeated after the third week of games. In addition to this season, in 1985 (Chicago Bears and L.A. Rams) and 1983 (Dallas Cowboys and L.A. Raiders) there were only two undefeated teams left after Week 3.

There were, however, two seasons, 1971 and 1972, when there was only one team undefeated after Week 3. In 1971 it was the Washington Redskins; in 1972 it was the Miami Dolphins.

Since 2000, the average number of undefeated teams after Week #3 is just under five per season.
