Today’s Sports Stat-September 7, 2017

It’s pretty rare when you can sit at a major league baseball game and witness history. I certainly didn’t think that would be the case when we walked into Comerica Park in Detroit on September 3 to watch the Tigers host the Cleveland Indians. But that day we watched a performance that would have been accomplished only eight times previously in baseball history.

While my wife and I were on a short vacation visiting an old college teammate/roommate (and his wife) of mine from the University of New Mexico baseball team, we not only saw the Indians drub the host Tigers 11-1, but we also saw a performance by the Tribe’s second baseman, Jose Ramirez that was pretty rare.

From section 124, row 30, seat 9, I saw Ramirez collect five hits in the game, all extra base hits. He ended the game with two home runs and three doubles. It was only the ninth time in MLB history that a player had five or more hits in a game, all extra base hits… five or more hits in a game and not one single in the bunch!

For the record, here are the nine players who have now collected five or more hits in a game, none of them singles (all extra base hits):

Jose Ramirez, September 3, 2017
Kris Bryant, June 27, 2016
Jackie Bradley, August 15, 2015
Josh Hamilton, May 8, 2012
Kelly Shoppach, July 30, 2008
Steve Garvey, August 28, 1977
Willie Stargell, August 1, 1970
Joe Adcock, July 31, 1954
Lou Boudreau, July 14, 1946
