Today’s Sports Stat: January 5, 2018


With this year’s NFL playoffs ready to kickoff tomorrow, here is a pair of stats to get you ready for this weekend’s games.

  • Nineteen of the 32 NFL teams have won at least one playoff game this decade (since 2010). Topping the list, as you might expect, are the New England Patriots with 11 playoff victories since 2010 (season).

They are followed by: 9 playoff wins this decade-Green Bay and Seattle; 7-Baltimore; 6-Denver; 5-Pittsburgh, San Francisco; 4-New York Giants; 3-Atlanta, Carolina, Indianapolis, Houston; 2-New Orleans, N.Y. Jets; 1-Arizona, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, San Diego.

 

  • This weekend is Wild Card Weekend. Wild Card Games have been played in the NFL since 1978. The Green Bay Packers have the most Wild Card Game wins in the league with 10.

Following are the number of Wild Card Game wins by each of the 32 franchises (current city of the franchise is noted below).

10: Green Bay
8: Seattle
7: Baltimore, Philadelphia, Tennessee
6: Dallas, Indianapolis, Miami, Minnesota, N.Y. Giants, N.Y. Jets, Pittsburgh, Washington
5: L.A. Chargers
4: New England, Oakland, San Francisco
3: Arizona, Atlanta, Buffalo, Carolina, Houston, Jacksonville, Kansas City, L.A. Rams, New Orleans
2: Chicago, Denver
1: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Tampa Bay
0: Detroit

The Detroit Lions are the only franchise that has never won a Wild Card Game; they are 0-9 in those contests. The Carolina Panthers are the only team that has not lost a Wild Card Game; they are 3-0 in their three Wild Card Games.

The Packers and Eagles top the list with the most Wild Card Games played with 15 each (does not include Wild Card Games played this season). They are followed by Minnesota (13); Indianapolis, Miami, Seattle and Tennessee (12 each); Dallas, N.Y. Giants, N.Y. Jets and Pittsburgh (11 each); and Kansas City (10).
