Today’s Sportstats: January 3, 2019

Through NBA games of January 2, there are five teams averaging over 115 points per game. The five: Milwaukee (117.0), New Orleans (116.3), L.A. Clippers (115.8), Golden State (115.8) and Sacramento (115.0).

Here are 10 stats you may not know about NBA teams that average 115 points or more for the entire season.

  1. A total of 102 NBA teams have averaged 115 or more points in an NBA season.
  2. Eighty of the 102 teams (78%) made the playoffs in that season where they averaged 115+ points.
  3. The highest per game average in league history is 126.5 by the 1981-82 Denver Nuggets.
  4. Seventeen of the 102 teams finished the season with a winning percentage above .700.
  5. The Los Angeles Lakers have had the most seasons with a 115 or higher points per game average. They did it in 12 seasons. Denver and Boston are tied for second in this stat with nine such seasons.
  6. The Milwaukee Bucks highest scoring seasons were 1969-70 (118.8 points per game) and 1970-71 (118.4 points per game).
  7. Thirty-three of the 102 teams finished the regular season with a winning percentage under .500.
  8. The worst record for a team to finish the year averaging over 115 points per game was 20-62 by the 1990-91 Denver Nuggets.
  9. Thirty-four of the 102 teams on this list played in the three-point era.
  10. In the 1967-68 and 1969-70 NBA seasons there were nine teams each that ended the season with a points per game average 115 or above. That’s the most in a season. There were no teams at the 115 mark or above from 1992-93 through 2015-16; there were two such teams in 2016-17, Houston (115.3) and Golden State (115.9). There were none last season.
