Another quality start for Corbin Burnes… in a Brewers loss

On Wednesday September 14th, the Brewers dropped a 4-1 contest to St. Louis. Starting Brew Crew pitcher Corbin Burnes pitched seven innings allowing three earned runs. That qualified as a “quality start” for Burnes, a stat that awards a quality start to a starting pitcher who goes at least six innings and surrenders three or fewer earned runs.

Burnes tops the club this year with 19 quality starts followed by Eric Lauer’s 12 and Brandon Woodruff’s 11. The Brewers are 13-6 in Burnes’ 19 quality starts. It was also the third time this season that Burnes was the losing pitcher of record in a quality start (Lauer has also been the losing pitcher of record in three quality starts this season).

Of the current starting pitching staff for the Brewers, Woodruff has 50 career quality starts, good enough for a tie for 22nd on the Brewers all-time list. Burnes has tallied 41 career quality starts which puts him in a tie for 31st on the Brewers list. Freddy Peralta has 26 career quality starts… that puts him in the Brewers Top 50 in that category (he’s tied for 49th on the list).

Ben Sheets tops the Brewers all-time career quality starts leaderboard with 135. He is followed by Yovani Gallardo. Here is the Top 10 in career quality starts for the Brewers:

Ben Sheets-135
Yavani Gallardo-134
Jim Slaton-133
Moose Haas-123
Teddy Higuera-1991
Mike Caldwell-119
Bill Wegman-111
Chris Bosio-89
Cal Eldred-84
Jim Colborn-80

Here’s a few more Brewers’ quality starts stats you may not know:

  • The Brewers are 32-9 in Burnes’ 41 career quality starts.
  • Sheets was the losing pitcher in 33 quality starts with the Brewers. That tops the team in that stat. Slaton ranks second with 31 quality start losses.
  • Nine of Sheets pitching losses in 2004 were in quality starts. That’s the most losses by a pitcher in quality starts for the Brewers in a season. Jim Lonborg (8 quality start losses in 1972) and Bill Parson (8 quality start losses in 1971) follow Sheets.
  • Higuera (1986), Caldwell (1978) and Marty Pattin (1971) jointly hold the team record for most quality starts in a season, each with 26.
