Is performing well in extra-inning games an important factor in success in the major leagues?
Looking at games in the 2017 MLB season, we see there are 13 of the 30 teams that have a winning record (above .500) in extra-inning games. Of those 13, all six of the current division leaders (the Dodgers, Cubs and Nats in the N.L.; the Red Sox, Astros and Indians in the A.L.) have a winning record in extra-inning contests this season.
The Orioles (not one of the division-leaders) have the best extra-inning record at 10-2 (.833) in the majors. The other three teams with a winning percentage above .700 in extra-inning games this season are the Dodgers (8-3 .727), Diamondbacks (8-3 .727) and Red Sox (11-3 .786). The D’Backs currently hold one of the Wild Card spots in the N.L., while the Dodgers and Red Sox, as noted above, are division-leaders.
Here’s one more stat about this year’s extra-inning games records: The 13 teams that have a winning record in extra-inning games have a combined overall record of 886-755, a .540 winning percentage. The 17 teams that do not have a winning record in extra-inning games are a combined 1005-1136, a .469 winning percentage.

With a win last night, the Los Angeles Dodgers collected their 80th victory of the season. With a record of 80-33 (a .708 winning percentage), the Dodgers are on a pace to win 115 games. The franchise record is 105 wins set by the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers.
The Dodgers franchise has won 100 or more games in a season six times: 1899 (the Brooklyn Superbas), the 1941, 1942 and 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers, and the 1962 and 1974 Los Angeles Dodgers.
Before the Dodgers’ fans make plans for a World Series victory parade, however, it should be noted that of the six times the Dodgers won 100 or more games in a season, they went to the World series three times… and lost each time!

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros became the 10th and 11th teams in MLB history to win 60 or more games before the All-Star break. The Dodgers have the Majors best record at the break at 61-29 while the Astros are a half-game back at 60-29.
It was only the second time in baseball history that two teams had 60+ wins before the All-Star Game in the same season. In 1969, the Orioles had 65 wins at the break and the Cubs had 61. The O’s 65 wins before the All-Star Game in ‘69 are the most first half wins of any team in MLB history.
Of the nine teams prior to the Dodgers and Astros to win 60+ in the first half of a season, five made it to the World Series that season with only two (the 1975 Cincinnati Reds and the 1998 New York Yankees) winning the championship that season.

World Series win gives Red Sox a turnaround for the ages

Not only did the Boston Red Sox give their hometown fans a gift by allowing them to celebrate a World Series title in Fenway (a 95-year wait), but their victory over the St. Louis Cardinals has given the Angels, Blue Jays, Brewers, Giants, Mariners, Mets, Padres, Phillies and Rockies a glimmer of hope as these teams approach the 2014 MLB season. (The glimmer may be somewhat smaller for the Astros, Cubs, Marlins, Twins and White Sox.)
The Red Sox became the 14th team in MLB history to win the World Series a year after finishing with a winning percentage under .500. In 2012, the Red Sox were 69-93 (a .426 winning percentage). Their .426 winning percentage the year prior to their World Series title is the lowest in major league history.

Torii Hunter, Carlos Beltran hoping to finally get World Series appearance

Team members and coaches of the Cardinals, Dodgers, Red Sox and Tigers are hoping that their team will get four wins in their respective league championship series and make it to the World Series. For two players, however, that desire for a trip to the World Series may be burning a little hotter than his teammates.
Detroit‘s Torii Hunter and St. Louis Carlos Beltran currently rank second and third on the list of active major league players who have played the most regular season games without playing in the World Series. Hunter has played in 2,091 games and Beltran has 2,064 games under his belt without making an appearance in the World Series. For Beltran, this is his fourth time playing in an LCS (the final stop before the World Series). Hunter is making his third appearance in an LCS; this is the seventh season that he has played in the post-season.
Of players who played in the majors in 2013, Miguel Tejada tops the list; he has played in 2,171 games without getting to the Fall Classic.

While Hunter and Beltran have over 2,000 games played without a World Series appearance, they are still several games short of the all-time leader. Rafael Palmeiro played in 2,831 MLB games in his career, appeared in two LCS and played in the post-season in three seasons. He did not, however, ever see action in the World Series.
