10 stats you may not know about the Bucks’ Malcolm Brogdon winning the 2017 NBA Rookie of the Year Award

The Milwaukee Bucks Malcolm Brogdon on Monday night became the 68th player to receive the NBA’s Rookie of the Year honors. A second-round choice of the Bucks out of the University of Virginia, Brogdon became the first second round pick to win the award in the league’s history.

Here are 10 stats you may not know about Brogdon winning the ROY honor.

  1. Brogdon averaged 26.4 minutes in his first season in the NBA. It is the fewest average minutes played in a season by any ROY in league history. Only three players who won the ROY averaged less than 30 minutes played per game in the season they won the award: Brogdon (26.4), Mike Miller (29.1 with Orlando in 2001) and Tommy Heinsohn (29.9 with Boston in 1957).
  2. Brogdon had a three-point shooting percentage of .404, which is the third highest of any ROY winner. The aforementioned Miller was at .407 his rookie season and Larry Bird shot .406 from the three-point arc his rookie campaign with the Celtics in 1980.
  3. Brogdon averaged 2.8 rebounds per game, the third lowest of any ROY award winner. Lowest: Phil Ford, 2.3 rebounds per game for the Kansas City Kings in 1979.
  4. Brogdon’s 4.2 assists per game puts him in a tie for 24th among the 68 ROY winners.
  5. His 1.1 steals per game places him tied for 23rd among the 68 ROY winners.
  6. Brogdon averaged 10.2 points per game. That is now the lowest PPG of any ROY recipient in NBA history. The previous low was 10.7 by Monk Meineke in 1953. Brogdon’s 10.2 PPG is only the ninth under 15 points per game of the ROY award winners.
  7. Brogdon’s .457 field goal percentage ranks 36th of the 68 ROY winners.
  8. Brogdon is only the second Bucks ROY in league history. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Lew Alcindor) won the award in 1970.
  9. At age 24, Brogdon is one of only three players age 24 to win the NBA Rookie of the Year. David Robinson and Elgin Baylor were both 24 when they won the award. No one age 25 or older has ever won the league ROY. Since 2000, 11 of the 18 players who won the award were either age 19 or 20.
  10. Brogdon started 28 games for the Bucks this past season. It is the fewest games started by the eventual ROY winner since Vince Carter started 49 games in 1998-99.Bonus stat: Brogdon is only the fifth rookie in league history to play in 50 games his rookie season, and have a .450 field goal percentage, a .400 three-point field goal percentage, and .850 free throw percentage. The other rookies to accomplish this rare shooting trifecta were Steph Curry and Darren Collison in 2010, Anthony Morrow in 2009 and B.J. Armstrong in 1990.Bonus stat: Brogdon is only the fifth rookie in league history to play in 50 games his rookie season, and have a .450 field goal percentage, a .400 three-point field goal percentage, and .850 free throw percentage. Milwaukee Bucks rookie Malcolm Brogdon last night was chosen as the 2016-17 NBA Rookie of the Year. He is only the second Bucks player to win the honor… Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won the award in 1969-70.

Three interesting stats regarding Brogdon’s selection:

  1. He averaged 26.4 minutes per game. That is the fewest of any ROY recipient in league history. Mike Miller won the award with Orlando in 2001 and averaged 29.1 minutes per game, the fewest for a ROY award winner prior to Brogdon.
  2. Brogdon, at age 24, is one of only three ROY award winners to win the award at age 24 (the oldest age to win a ROY). The others: David Robinson (1990) and Elgin Baylor (1959). Since 2000, 11 of the 19 ROY winners were under the age 21.
  3. Brogdon averaged 10.2 points per game for the Bucks in his first season, the lowest points per game of a ROY recipient in NBA history.

NBA Stats: Is it time to start promoting Bucks’ Malcolm Brogdon as this year’s ROY?

malcolmbrogdon

“With the 36th pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, the Milwaukee Bucks select Malcolm Brogdon, guard from the University of Virginia.”

When the Bucks made this selection of Brogdon in the second round of last year’s draft, there wasn’t much fanfare, in fact, most Bucks fans probably had little idea what the team was getting with Brogdon. Almost a year later, the team, its fans, and the NBA are taking notice of Brogdon and his play on the court.

At the All-Star break, Brogdon is averaging 9.4 points per game, 2.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists. He is also averaging 25.6 minutes per game, an unusually high number of minutes on the court for a first-year player, let alone a rookie who was drafted in the second round.

While the Bucks brass may be pleasantly surprised with Brogdon’s play, imagine the surprise of the rest of the NBA. In fact, you could certainly make a case for Brogdon as this year’s Rookie of the Year. Yes, a second-round player garnering a ROY Award!

Well, let’s take a moment and make the case for Brogdon as ROY. First, Brogdon has scored 517 points, most of any of the rookies taken in the second round. His closest competitor is fellow second-rounder Isaiah Whitehead of Utah who has scored 338 points for the Jazz. Not bad, you say. But here’s where things get interesting. In looking at all players taken in the 2016 NBA Draft, Brogdon’s 517 points ranks first; yes, that’s right, he has scored more points than every player taken head of him in the draft.

His 9.4 ppg ranks first among players drafted in 2016, as does his 4.2 assists per game. He also has 2.7 rebounds per game, not bad for a rookie guard… that stat ranks seventh among the draftees. His aforementioned 25.6 minutes per game ranks second among 2016 draftees (L.A. Lakers 2016 selection Brandon Ingram tops the list).

(Just for clarification, Brogdon ranks third in points for first-year players… a pair of Philadelphia 76ers, Joel Embiid and Dario Saric, lead the list of most points for rookies; neither was drafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, however.)

There is still a whole half of a season to go, but continued strong play from Brogdon will certainly keep his name near the top of the list for 2016-17 NBA ROY.

One more note about second-round draft choices by the Milwaukee Bucks. Brogdon has gotten off to a great start as the Bucks 2016 second round choice. But past history has shown us that the Bucks have selected a few other “gems” in the second round of the NBA Draft.

Here’s a look at the most career points in the league by players who were drafted in the second round by the Bucks. There are 15 players drafted in the second round by the Bucks who scored 3,000 or more points in their NBA careers. Of these 15, five never put on a Bucks uniform.
